HISTORY OF BINGO
Bingo, in the way that we see it nowadays, is a lottery and the history of bingo leads back to 1530, in Italy. Back then the Italian National Lottery - "Lo Giuoco del Lotto D'Italia" - was held every Saturday. Nowadays the Italian State Lottery is very important to the budget of the Italian government - it brings more than 70 million dollars every year. The game was brought from Italy to France in 1778, where it was called "Le Lotto". "Le Lotto" was played among the rich Frenchmen. During the 1800s educational games, based on the lotto, were developed and became popular. For example, in the 1850s the Germans used a lotto game in order to help children learn their multiplication tables.
In the 1920s the game was brought to North America and was called "Beano". The first time the game was played was at a carnaval which was taking place in Jacksonville, Georgia. Edwin Lowe who had a toy company saw the game at the carnaval and estimated the popularity it could get. He took the game of "Beano", changed some of the rules and changed the name to "Bingo". The interest in bingo was quickly growing and Lowe had to raise the number of combinations on the bingo cards. For the purpose Lowe hired Carl Leffler who was a professor at Columbia University and Leffler devised 6000 new bingo cards with non-repeating groups.
