BACCARAT HISTORY
Baccarat is a game of chance and the baccarat historyconsidered to have started in 15th centurty. Since it dates back from 15th century, researchers have different opinions as to the actual place of origin of the Baccarat. However, the researchers have agreed that the game has first appeared in France or Italy. It is very difficult to determine which one of the two courties is the place of origin of the Baccarat because there are variations of the game in both countries. No matter where it first appeared, the name in Italian (“baccara”) and in French (“baccarat”) means “Zero”. It is named “Zero” because the 10s, Jacks, Queens and the Kings are valued 0 points.
Many people believe that the Baccarat first appeared in Italy atnd was invented by Felix Falguiere in the end of 15th century from tarot cards. A rutual of the Etruscan was transformed by Felix Falguiere and he made a game of chance called “baccarat” - in Venetian slang “baccarat” meant “Zero". In this ritual the Etruscan people prayed to a blond woman, waiting for her to throw a 9-sided die. The result showed what her faith would be. If she threw 5 or less, she had to go to the sea and drown. If she threw 6 or 7, she would be allowed to live. If she threw 8 or 9, she would become a priestess. The good thing is that, things have changed since then... :-)
The first version of the baccarat, created by Falguiere, was played with a deck of tarot cards and it was brought to France in 1490, where it was played by the French nobles. After that it became a casino game and was developed to become European Baccarat and “Chemin de Fer”, that we play nowadays.
In 20th century, Baccarat was taken from Europe and brought to South America and later in USA but the game didn’t gain the same popularity as it gained in Europe. In Cuba, the Baccarat was changed and was named Punto Banco (also called American Baccarat). In European Baccarat the player had the opportunity to play against the other players, and the casino took percentage (as the rake in poker), while in American Baccarat the players were betting against the casino.
